Validity: Same Difference or Real Difference? Assessment for Recertification vs. Entry to Practice

Recertification, continued professional certification or maintenance of certification, no matter what we call it, controversy abounds about many aspects of the process. Perhaps the most controversial element is a required assessment. When an organization mandates a recertification assessment the validity focus turns to the practice of an experienced practitioner, not an entry level candidate. As defined in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, “validity refers to the degree to which evidence and theory support the interpretations of test scores for proposed uses of tests.” This session will evaluate theoretical and practical considerations as the validity focus shifts. Topics covered will include practice analysis, standard setting, item writing, results reporting, possible variants in administration modalities, SME involvement, stakeholder communication and accreditation implications. In instances where there is some debate about good practice, the audience will be asked to provide their perspective.
