Becoming the SME Whisperer: Creating a Culture of Engaged, Hardworking (and Happy) SMEs
Track: Test Development and Administration
Licensure and credentialing examinations depend on subject matter experts (SMEs) to do much of the "heavy lifting" when it comes to developing, reviewing, approving, and monitoring test content. Finding SMEs can be relatively easy, but keeping them around—let alone keeping them happy and productive—can be another thing entirely. ICE's published a white paper, Becoming the SME Whisperer: Creating a Culture of Engaged, Hardworking (and Happy) Subject-Matter Experts, that is part case study and part toolkit for test development professionals who are interested in creating not only a sense of investment among their SMEs, but also a sense of group cohesion and overall program continuity. ASWB has an established track record for engaging SMEs, and keeping them engaged over the years, through an evolving set of responsibilities. The EPoster session touches on practical tips for increasing SME satisfaction as well as more nuanced considerations around how to nurture group cohesion among professionals who often come from diverse professional and demographic backgrounds.
