Best Practices in Subject Matter Expert Talent Management
Track: Test Development and Administration
Most credentialing programs depend on a strong team of subject matter experts (SMEs) to carry out exam development activities and other strategic initiatives. What procedures can credentialing bodies implement to ensure SMEs are well-suited to the task at hand and contribute in a productive manner? In this session, the presenters and audience members will share best practices in SME talent management (recruitment, engagement, and retention).
We will begin with an audience survey conducted through the ICE Exchange mobile app or a similar tool. Audience members will be asked questions related to their selection and management of SMEs who support test development activities and other strategic initiatives for their programs or programs they work with. Selection of SMEs includes qualification criteria and vetting practices. Management of SMEs includes incentivizing, organizing, assessing performance, and retaining individuals best suited for supporting item development needs. Audience input will be immediately displayed and used as a springboard for the presenters to speak to the survey questions. Are the results consistent with panel members’ expectations? What are the implications of alternative strategies and what recommendations do they have about best practices? One panelist will serve as chair to engage audience participation in the discussion. Attendees will come away with new ideas they can implement to manage their SME talent.
