Making Virtual a Reality: Embracing Remote Item Development

Track: Test Development and Administration

Session Number: 4066
Date: Thu, Oct 26th, 2017
Time: 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM

Item development is one of the most significant aspects of the evolution of any certification program. When considering time and resources, it can often also be the most expensive program cost. By exploring one organization’s item development evolution, this session will discuss the benefits of moving from face-to-face item writing events to virtual workshops and describe how this strategy can be applied to a variety of organizational environments regardless of infrastructure constraints. Volunteer Subject Matter Expert (SME) recruitment and creative incentives, staff involvement, and item security will be examined along with other considerations that should be addressed when considering holding virtual item writing workshops. We will discuss how these changes can be implemented while not affecting budgetary concerns. In fact, there is considerable cost savings in most instances.  Additionally, we will describe how these changes do not cause any decline or sacrifice in quality or security of items.
