Lessons Learned When Launching a New Certification
Track: Test Development and Administration
Launching a new certification is a daunting task. There are many questions that need to be asked and answered when starting a new exam title or a whole new program. We will look at a few case studies from organizations that have recently launched new credentials, either as an enhancement to their existing certifications or as a redesign of their portfolio. For example, one organization successfully launched an early-career credential to complement their existing credentials. In less than four months, they conducted a national job analysis survey, developed test specifications, wrote and reviewed 800+ items, and created two unique 175-item forms for beta testing. Within one year, regular administration started. This project was fast-tracked but the organization still had all the checkpoints in place. We will focus on the decision points and lessons learned of these projects with the aim of assisting other organizations going through a similar process. We will focus on the questions that need to be asked and answered for the project to be successful, the decision points that need to occur when deciding to move forward, and the metrics for success.
