Ideas about what professional credentials should look like and the purpose they serve have dramatically evolved in the last few years. This evolution has been spurred by: (1) the growing recognition that our traditional, “one size fits all” credentialing approach may not meet the needs of today’s (or tomorrow’s) key stakeholders and what they value about the credentialing process and (2) newcomers in the credentialing space who are attempting to fill this gap with innovative, non-traditional approaches to skills validation. To continue to fulfill their credentialing missions and effectively serve the fields they represent, organizations will need to expand their views of credentialing or risk losing their market share to other entities who are more willing to provide non-traditional solutions.
