About Institute for Local Innovations
Founded in 2012, the Institute for Local Innovations (ILI) builds capacities, captures and transfers knowledge, and lifts up innovations in community development. ILI serves as a catalyst for positive change in low-wealth communities within the United States – whether urban, suburban, or rural – by mobilizing organizations and community development experts to build economically and socially healthier communities.
ILI has channeled over $1million in grant funds from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to assistant some two dozen community based organizations (CBOs) in New Orleans improve their stability to better service their constituency in areas of education, health & wellness and family economic security.
ILI aims to 1) Increase the sustainability of organizations; 2) Increase organizational capacity through data capturing and transfer, from elder knowledge to constituent experiences of injustice; and, 3) Identify and advance innovations in community development.
Key Initiatives & Programs
TREASURE - Knowledge Capture and Transfer Across Generations
ILI guides organizations to value the rich historical knowledge of their retiring leaders through technology and forums to develop and retain young talent.
Plus, ILI provides technical assistance for Mi Rialiti [my reality], a smart phone app-based repository and equity lens to capture individuals’ experiences of injustice, resilience, and adaptation to promote advocacy and healing.
THINK-DO - Community Development & Entrepreneurial Innovations:
Community Development & Entrepreneurial Innovations: A ‘think-do tank’, Innovation Hub incubates innovative interventions for addressing community development challenges locally, regionally, and nationally. Programs include:
- CUSP: As a designated organization of the Wells Fargo Community & Urban Stabilization Program (CUSP), ILI is working towards creating affordable housing for women veterans with children in the Greater New Orleans Region
- TIME Challenge: Connecting brilliant young minds at HBCUs with NASA technology to facilitate entrepreneurship, innovation, and new business development
- ARKS: STEM graphic novel
- ILI OpenSOURCE Forum: “Where Innovators Come to Share”
TRANSFORM - Organizational Stability & Capacity Building
Technical assistance for non-profits to enhance organizational stability (financial management, legal compliance, data evaluation); priorities (strategic planning, program development, evaluation); culture (leadership development, human resources, governance).
