Session Description:

Regulators and certifying bodies look to accredited CME/CE to ensure that physicians and other members of the healthcare team are continuously learning, changing, and improving.  How do you know that accredited CME/CE can “deliver” and support clinicians in their efforts to deliver optimal patient care?

Responding to learners, patients and other stakeholders of the CME/CE system, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has evolved its approach to accreditation over the last 15 years.  CME/CE accredited through the ACCME system is assured to be,

  • Based on needs/gaps of learners
  • Designed to change competence, performance, or patient outcomes
  • Evaluated for change in competence, performance, or patient outcomes
  • Based on valid content
  • Independent of commercial interests

In collaboration with its accredited community, ACCME recently issued a new menu of criteria for Accreditation with Commendation, which recognizes providers that demonstrate practices that go beyond expectations – including explicit demonstration of improved clinician performance, quality or patient/population health outcomes.  Accreditation with Commendation requires even more evidence that accredited CME helps credentialing organizations earn the public’s trust.

Participants in this session will hear from a representative of the ACCME who will share her perspective on the evolution of the accredited CME/CE system, describe the evidence of the effectiveness of CME/CE, and highlight the alignment between accredited CME/CE and other stakeholder expectations.  A public member from a health professional certifying body will comment from the consumer point of view.
